Assignments for May 6th

Writing
Bring in a completed first draft of your report. You can also email it to Rachel by Tuesday at 3:00 if you would like her to be able to read and edit it before we meet.
Reading
Read all introductions and chapters 1 - 7. Study the map.
This book is non-fiction, but it is written in narrative form, not informational (or expository). Summaries will most likely resemble those you have done with other narrative texts. However, the Passage Picker and Discussion Director will need to treat this as informational text, not a story.

Greek Names and the Aegean Seas' Name

In ancient times there were various explanations for the name Aegean. It was said to have been named after the Greek town of Aegae, or after Aegea queen of the Amazons,(In A Midsummer Nights Dream the queen of the Amazons is Hippolta, speaking of Shakespeare borrowing.. ) who died in the sea, or Aigaion, the "sea goat", another name of Briareus, one of the archaic Hecatonchires, or, especially among the Athenians, Aegeus, the father of Thesus, ( Shakespeare borrowing again!) who drowned himself in the sea when he thought his son had died.

Assignments for Thursday March 11, 2010

Hi all,
For Thursday let's try to read the first Act of A Midsummer's Night Dream. Shakespeare can be tough. I've found the No Fear Shakespeare versions to be helpful in understanding the plays/language. The common English translation is right there next to the Shakespearean English. Whatever version you choose to use is fine by me.

Jobs
Noah: Passage Picker
Dave: Summarize Scene 1
Abigail: Discussion Director
Hope: Summarize Scene 2
Maura: Amazing Artist

Please call me at 899-5055 or 598-2121 if you have questions about the expectations for your job. My internet is being unreliable.

I can't wait to see everyone's persuasive essays next week. I hope the final drafts are coming along well. Holler if you need help.
