A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L'Engle (We could also read a sequel if everyone has read one or more in the series.)

The Other Side of the Island, Alegra Goodman
The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer (This one comes highly recommended from a librarian friend of mine.)

I've read a Wrinkle in Time and both the books that come after it. I am going to go to the library tomorrow and see about the others.

Fahrenheit 451 does look really good! The Other Side of the Island might be my first choice, though. I don't have a clue about Rat Trap because all three of the library's copies are out.
